Motown Rumble 2021

On Sunday 30 May, 2021, the Durban Art Deco Society conducted a ramble around Durban’s old Motown district, near the beach end of Pixley KaSeme (West) Street and Anton Lembede (Smith) Street. Attended by 26 members and friends, the walk was guided by architect and conservationist Robert Brusse, who gave a fascinating commentary on both the Art Deco buildings and a number from the earlier Union period. With the area off the beaten track nowadays, there was general surprise at the number of unique buildings there, but also disappointment at some inappropriate alterations.
