Art Deco Book 2021
DURBAN
ART DECO - HERITAGE OF A SUB-TROPICAL AFRICAN CITY
The Durban Art
Deco Society Committee has for a number of years had the aim to publish a book
on the Art Deco of our city. We have accumulated photographs and documentation
over the years. More recently, avid researcher Boaz Chaves joined our committee
and began digging up interesting historical information and photographs which
lent themselves to the book. Early in 2021 we realised that our normal
activities would be compromised by the Covid-19 Pandemic, so we decided to put
a strong focus into making the book happen instead.
It was decided
that the book was to have visual impact with anecdotal and interesting
information on the buildings. It would not necessarily be comprehensive or too
technical. A review of our photo inventory revealed that though we had lots of
pictures, they often were not under the best light conditions and angles. So
committee members were tasked with filling the photo and information gaps. In
the meantime Boaz Chaves, Mike Mulholland, Carol Allan and Arthur Gammage got
on with beating the layout and text into shape. By mid-year we were ready to
print, with the committee approving expenditure on 50 copies. These were sold
quite quickly, so the committee approved a further print of 150.
